Association football, also called simply football, is a team sport usually played between two sides of eleven players each. It is played by about 250 million players throughout more than 200 nations and dependencies, which make it the world's most popular sport. The game is often refereed by the referees, whose job is to take a football away from any team or player that they see to be guilty of misconduct, typically a foul or offence of a dangerous nature. This is to keep the flow of the game alive and kicking.

The object of the game is to kick the ball around an area called a playing field and score points either through a goal or through the number of passes made with the ball. Each team is given three scorers who are typically the goalkeeper, the defenders and the forward. This is done by spreading the players across the two sides of the playing field, rather than playing them close to one another as in standard association football. The referee will then whistle for the start of the match and the two teams will be immediately put into separate groups and the teams will start their turns.

Football can be played professionally in America, England, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and South Africa. A number of smaller nations also compete regularly. International football is played every four years in international friendlies. Every four years, four nations are chosen to represent the footballing world at the World Cup tournament, an event akin to the Olympics in that each country is only allowed to participate once. The other countries have chosen not to participate in the tournament since it was first created.

Football can be an incredibly enjoyable and competitive sport, but is also one of the oldest sports known to man. Football is one of the few games that are played on an international scale and is almost compulsory for anyone who is eligible to join the military. Although football is the most well-known game in the English speaking world, there are other nations with football associations that are just as popular. Many non-English speakers in non-English speaking countries watch matches either professionally or on a television with the assumption that the ball games are being played in English. The English football association has been playing matches since 1860, when they were formed after a competition to decide the fate of the game. The first recorded match took place in the premiership season when the now Manchester United FC of England faced off against the Leeds City F.A. This would become a memorable occasion, as it would result in a win by a score of 2-1. The first ever meeting of this kind would take place in the next season when United visited Liverpool for what would be a three-way semi-final in what would become known as the FA Cup.
