Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, he tells a deeply personal story of the craft that nearly killed him, and shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world's forgotten people and places.

Sebastião Salgado captures the dignity of the dispossessed through large-scale, long-term projects.

In long-term relationships, we often expect our beloved to be both best friend and erotic partner. But as Esther Perel argues, good and committed sex draws on two conflicting needs: our need for security and our need for surprise. So how do you sustain desire? With wit and eloquence, Perel lets us in on the mystery of erotic intelligence.

In her practice and writing, Esther Perel helps loving couples navigate between the comfort of happy relationships and the thrilling uncertainty of sexual attraction.

Does texting mean the death of good writing skills? John McWhorter posits that thereÂ’s much more to texting -- linguistically, culturally -- than it seems, and itÂ’s all good news.

Linguist John McWhorter thinks about language in relation to race, politics and our shared cultural history.

Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson has parliamentarians roaring in their seats during the third marriage equality bill reading.

What motivates us to work? Contrary to conventional wisdom, it isn't just money. But it's not exactly joy either. It seems that most of us thrive by making constant progress and feeling a sense of purpose. Behavioral economist Dan Ariely presents two eye-opening experiments that reveal our unexpected and nuanced attitudes toward meaning in our work. (Filmed at TEDxRiodelaPlata.)

It's become increasingly obvious that the dismal science of economics is not as firmly grounded in actual behavior as was once supposed. In "Predictably Irrational," Dan Ariely tells us why.

Deittigalleria vai deittiallergia?Perjantai 12.04.2013 18:24

Vuosien varrella muutamaan kertaan on pohdittu kevyiden deittiominaisuuksien tuomista galtsuun. Kaikkiahan on turha edes yrittää miellyttää..

Esim:
  • Nykyisen iän ja kaupungin lisäksi esim pituus, ruumiinrakenne, ruokavalio jne
  • Mahdollisuus ilmoittaa kiinnostuksensa joko tyttöihin, poikiin tai molempiin (tai jotain siltä väliltä?)
  • Minkä ikäisistä olisi kiinnostunut (ks. aiempi ikähaarukkarajaus)
  • Maantieteellinen rajaus, esim vain oman kaupungin sisällä, 50km säteellä, missä tahansa jne
  • Lyhyt kysely millä kartoitetaan muutamia elämänasenteellisia mieltymyksiä joiden perusteella voidaan laskea karkea match-prosentti
  • Mahdollisuus Kyselyissä merkitä vastauksensa julkiseksi ja käyttää näitä match-prosentin laskemisessa
  • Avoin tekstikenttä deitti.netin tapaan vai muutamia eri aiheisia kenttiä Suomi24 ja OkCupidin tapaan?
  • Erilliset (anonyymit?) lisättävät ilmoitukset (deittinet) vai haku tietojen perusteella (S24, OkC)?

Ideoita, huolia, murheita, turhia toiveita? Kommenttia plx.

Hyeonseo Lee: My escape from North KoreaMaanantai 01.04.2013 03:56

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was “the best on the planet.” It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.

Born in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee left for China in 1997. Now living in South Korea, she has become an activist for fellow refugees.

Eric Whitacre: Virtual Choir LiveMaanantai 01.04.2013 03:32

Composer and conductor Eric Whitacre has inspired millions by bringing together "virtual choirs," singers from many countries spliced together on video. Now, for the first time ever, he creates the experience in real time, as 32 singers from around the world Skype in to join an onstage choir (assembled from three local colleges) for an epic performance of Whitacre's "Cloudburst," based on a poem by Octavio Paz.

After creating and conducting a worldwide virtual choir on YouTube, Eric Whitacre is now touring with an astonishing live choir.

When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naïve. In this funny and impassioned talk, he proposes that the first step is to listen to the people you're trying to help, and tap into their own entrepreneurial spirit. His advice on what works will help any entrepreneur.

Ernesto Sirolli got his start doing aid work in Africa in the 70's -- and quickly realised how ineffective it was.

Bobby Ghosh: Why global jihad is losingTorstai 13.12.2012 17:18

Throughout the history of Islam, says journalist Bobby Ghosh, there have been two sides to jihad: one, internal, a personal struggle to be better, the other external. A small minority (most recently Osama bin Laden) has appropriated the second, using it as an excuse for deadly global violence against "the West." Ghosh suggests that, now that bin Laden's worldwide organization has fragmented, it's time to reclaim the word.

Bobby Ghosh is an Editor-at-Large at Time magazine, where he covers conflict, global affairs and the Middle East. He was the magazine's Baghdad bureau chief for five years.
