America's leading man of soccer made the rounds of TV talk shows, bantering with Letterman, Regis and even Jon Stewart. He rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange and threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Dodgers game. He has not, however, been entirely prepared for the attention that has followed. Or, as Donovan added, "unless you're living under a rock, you've read the reports lately." That's a reference to accusations by a pregnant British woman that he had fathered her child. (Donovan played for the Liverpool club of Everton last winter.)

Donovan had said he would "provide the appropriate support" if true. But it turned out to be false.

"Those kinds of things are bothersome when you consider yourself just a good person who does things the right way," he said. "You read things or see pictures of yourself, and it's a little bit disturbing. You just have to be smart about where you are and realize that people are going to make things up and write things that sound exciting that aren't true."

The fact that Donovan breathed his non-fatherhood sigh of relief to entertainment outfit E! Online speaks to how his Q rating has skyrocketed.

Donovan now regrets those words and said he has nothing but fond memories of San Jose.

"I can put myself in their shoes and realize that they lost one of their best players and then they lost their team," he said, referring to how that version of the Quakes relocated to Houston. "That would make me upset as a fan, too. So I don't blame anybody for feeling the way they do. I think things have calmed down over time. But who knows?"

For the Quakes (6-4-4), a victory over the Galaxy (12-2-3) on the road would be a springboard into the second half of the season. But they will have to contain Donovan.

Yesterday, I reviewed 2 of the 5 new Training shoes that Nike unveiled last week in California. The new Nike SC 2010 Trainer Low and the New Nike Edge Trainer. Today I'll be reviewing the the other 3 Training shoes, the new Nike Free Trainer, the new Nike Zoom Huarache Mid and the new Nike Trainer 1.2. The Nike Trainer 1.2 has yet to hit the shelves so this will be the FIRST SNEAK PEAK at this shoe.

Whereas yesterday's shoes focused on a style of training built more around strength, the next 3 shoes in Nike's Trainer line are focused on speed, they're built with a player like Adrian Peterson, Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald in mind. Even though David Stern says the meeting won't happen, there has been a lot of excitement about the idea of this summer's top NBA free agents discussing with each other where they might end up playing next season.

There are all kinds of people in that conversation. LeBron James has said he's the ringleader. Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson ... it's a who's who of this year's free agent class. In terms of having a lot at stake, those players are at the top of the list with the owners, staffs and fans of the various teams.

But there is another interested party no one has mentioned: Nike, and its affiliated Jordan brand.

That is a giant corporation with a lot of branding tied up in basketball, and specifically the footwear of the best basketball players in the world, including James, Bosh, Wade and Johnson as well as Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki and dozens more who could change teams this year. Where they all end up will not just determine the fortunes of various NBA teams, but also the abilities of those players to inspire fans to buy shoes.

Two people with insight into the inner workings of the basketball shoe industry point out that Nike has as many dollars at stake in 2010 NBA free agency as anybody, and it's not exactly in the way you might expect.

There has long been a suggestion that a player like James would be more valuable to Nike in a major market like New York. Insiders suggest that a more important outcome for Nike may be to see James -- in whom the swoosh has invested close to $100 million -- wind up on a team where he can win solidify his reputation with championships.

One of the experts suggested that in that analysis, the Cavaliers, Bulls and Heat -- teams with more developed rosters than the Knicks or Nets -- would be the favorites.
