"Most of the influential bands in metal have had several books written about them. It's easy to find a book about Black Sabbath, Judas Priest or Metallica. It's not that easy to find a book about Slayer. As a matter of fact, author Joel McIver says this is the first English language biography of the band, even though they are a hugely popular and influential group.
The Bloody Reign Of Slayer isn't an official biography, but McIver interviewed the band members several times over the years and uses those along with other material and research. The book covers Slayer from their very beginning to the present day.
McIver covers the early days thoroughly, but also gives other parts of their career equal weight. From personal issues and relationships among the band members to the recording of albums to touring, The Bloody Reign Of Slayer covers it all.

The facts of the book seem to be presented pretty neutrally, but McIver makes his opinions crystal clear on the music. He makes definitive judgments on songs and albums that some may disagree with. He gives detailed reviews of nearly every song. Some are very insightful, while others are debatable. He describes the song "Angel Of Death" from Reign In Blood as follows: "Araya launches the most shattering death-scream ever uttered on record..." It's a powerful scream, but I'm not sure I'd go that far. Still, the opinions about the music make you want to listen to the CDs, and you can make your own judgments.

The Bloody Reign Of Slayer will appeal to both hardcore fans of the band and those not as familiar with their work. McIver balances general facts with deeper and more detailed information about the band members and the music. There's a lot of material, but it's well organized and an easy read. I enjoyed it and learned a lot about one of the great bands in heavy metal." taken from the about.com Heavy Metal Book Review
