Wash. wash. wash. gah, why was I thinking of some random word again, and oh, now it stopped making sense. thanks, I thought to myself. I felt a salty sweat drop tickle down my face but I wiped it of with my sleeve before it actually got the chance to jump of my face upon the papers I had in front of me. I rotated the pen I had in my hand between my fingers.
My name is Nicole, IÂ’m an artist. A comic drawer to be more precise, and I had a deadline coming up in a few weeks. Pretty much nothing was done yet.
I donÂ’t know what has caused all this, but for the past 2 months I havenÂ’t felt like drawing at all. ItÂ’s not like I would not be inspired or having a lack of interest, I just donÂ’t feel it.
I turned around on my office chair, the only joy I had during these stress filled all too hot summer days. I got off the chair and walked to one of the windows and opened it. A fresh, yet not very cool, summer breeze went through my hair and I closed my eyes. What the hell was I supposed to do. I had a problem that I could not solve without knowing what caused the problem, and that was also a part of the problem. I had absolutely NO idea what had caused all this lack if 'feelÂ’.
When I got the job, I was all ready to draw at the speed of light and finish everything in a few days, but on the second day I woke up and I just knew something was wrong. That day when I was gonna draw, nothing just happened. It was like the gears in my brains would have stopped spinning. I laughed at the thought even tho I knew the situation wasn’t funny at all, it was dead serious. I had my chance to tell the buyers I wouldn’t be able to finish it, but I didn’t think this ‘block’ was anything serious, and that it would all be over soon, but now it was too late. It’s not like they could just get any comic drawer to draw this, and within just 2 weeks! Oh god what a jerk I am.
I turned away from the window and walked down the stairs to make me some tea, there wasnÂ’t really anything else I could do than relax and try to get the feeling back. I looked out again as waiting for the water to start boiling. It truly was a beautiful summer day today.
I normally never stepped outside the house, and absolutely not if I had work that wasnÂ’t done and that should be done within 2 weeks, but this was an exception. I walked down the gravel road outside my house passing by the mighty birch and spruce forests that you could find pretty much anywhere around here, always in big clusters.
The smell was sweet. I donÂ’t know if it was the trees, summer or just me, but I swear, the smell was sweet. I continued walking down the road, listening to the birds sing in the trees.
Suddenly, I saw a girl in a blue dress croached beside the ditch. She was holding a stick, and cause of curiosity I walked up to her. It looked like she would be fishing.
- Hey, what are you doing out here all alone? WhereÂ’s your mom?, I asked her.
- IÂ’m fishing starfishÂ’s, she replied without even looking at me.
StarfishÂ’s? In a ditch? Well, I guess you can do that when you are a kid and think starfishÂ’s live in ditches. I croached down beside her.
- Can I try?, I asked, to show some interest.
- Sure, she smilingly handed over the stick to me.
There we sat, croached beside a ditch trying to catch starfishÂ’s. I donÂ’t know how long we actually sat there in silence, but it felt like just a few minutes, the only thing that actually made me notice more time than 'just a few minutesÂ’ had passed was the fact that it was getting dark.
- DonÂ’t you think you should go home soon? ItÂ’s getting dark, I asked her and was about to get up but she hold me back.
- Not yet, soon, she replied and we continued sitting there. Some times passed when she almost scared the crap out of me when she shouted loudly;
- Look! The starfishÂ’s!, she pointed into the ditch. And IÂ’ll be damned, but the ditch was filled with small twinkling starfishÂ’s. Actually I think it was just the reflection from the stars on the sky, but they actually looked like starfishÂ’s, and they were in all of the rainbows colors.
- Look! A shooting starfish! Make a wish, quick!, she shouted and closed her own eyes, wishing something quietly to her self, smiling. First I just looked at her, but then I decided to join in on the wishing moment. I guess you all can figure what I wished, and even if wishing to a 'shooting starfishÂ’ wouldnÂ’t actually make my wish come true, I felt much better after wishing.
Somehow, I canÂ’t seem to remember anything of what happened after that, next thing I know I wake up in my own bed. Actually, at that point I didnÂ’t remember anything from last night. I walked down the stairs to make me some tea, and as I picked out the box with the tea bags, something small fell on the floor. I picked it up, and it was a small pink star shaped plastic toy thing. It clicked in my brains, and the gears started rotating again. I grabbed my tea and ran off to my room. 3 weeks later, my comic got published, thanks starfish girl.
