One of the most important things to know about movies is that every movie, no matter how long or how short, has a basic plot. Basically, the plot is the reason and effect sequence of occurrences in a story. In a fictional story, movie, book or other story, the plot is basically the series of happenings where every results directly or indirectly affect the last one through the law of cause-and Effect. In technical use (such as a movie plot), however, it may also mean a story summary or storyline, and not necessarily a specific story. Although it is not necessary to analyze plot in the context of a story circle, it is useful to understand it as a shape or form. In music, there are two main rules of song structure: the major and the minor chords. By extension, you can break up the music into harmony and trouble, with each of the chords acting as a focus of the rest of the piece. The same method is applied to movie soundtracks: major and minor chords act as the central point of the story, while the secondary points of the story circle around it.
A movie begins with an introduction, an action, then a climax, followed by a resolution, and so on. The basic plot structure is A, B, C, D, E, F. Each of these plot points represents a mini-plot in the movie, which is developed by telling a story within the movie. Each of the story elements described above has a parallel in the movie, and the movie progresses from beginning to end. It is, essentially, a three-act structure.
Aristotle's notion of a three-act structure is simple to define. Act One introduces the conflict, the problem, and the protagonist, while Act Two adds more characters and more complexity to the problem, while the third act explores how the problem is resolved. The conflict is the what; the problem is what (for Aristotle, at least). However, Aristotle's idea of a problem is not limited to a problem with which a character is faced. Rather, the problem can also be one of an interest to the audience.
What does the movie summary serve to identify? It identifies the central conflict of the movie, which is the story's central point. Without this, the movie would simply be a plot of some sort--a story without characters. It would not have a beginning and would therefore lack a plot line.
But the idea of a story structure needs more explanation. Plot structure generally involves developing a plot so that it ends in a desired result or resolution. The difference between stories that have serious, emotionally driven characters and stories with more fantastical elements is that serious characters' plots tend to develop over multiple acts, whereas fantastical plots rely on a single plot to tell the story. Therefore, when writing a screenplay, unless you are writing a script by someone who has a great deal of experience in screenwriting, you should strive to keep your story's plot as simple as possible.
