Association football, commonly called simply football as well as American football is a team sport usually played between two sides of eleven players each. It is the most popular sport in the world and also the most played contact sport in the world, with more than 250 million people playing it in more than 200 countries and dependencies. The game was invented by the Frenchman Frise Arnault in 1874 and is so named because of the shape it is: it is round on the outside but has a long shape on the inside. Another early game, which did not become popularly known as Football until World War II was kicking a football. In this game two teams would fight for the ball. Often the players on either team received large sums of money as "dollars". As time went on and with the aid of the internet, this type of kick-off has evolved into what we know today as "soccer". There were also no rules to stop the extra kick or goal attempts as this was not done during the first days of football; therefore there were plenty of goals scored during this era.

Due to the influx of immigrants from Europe, including France, Spain and Italy, there was a huge demand for a professional football player. As this new wave of European immigrants came to the US, there was also a huge influx of European coaches who brought their practices and standards of football with them. Some of these were from France, while many others came from Germany, England and Belgium. Due to the influx of European coaches and players, the first pro football player in the US, Frank Brallier was called up by the Chicago Bears. The Bears liked Brallier's skills so much that they signed him to the first ever Professional American Football Association (PAFA) in history.

The story of Frank Brallier is an interesting example of how quickly professional football can take form when there is a need for a player. He was paid a very nominal salary of $15 a week and it did not take him long to make his way to the Hall Of Fame list. Frank Brallier played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers for one game, but his playing career spanned four decades. Some say that it was the money that attracted him to play football, while others mention his love of America and how he saw his contribution to the country. Regardless of the reason that he decided to make a go of it, there is no debate that Frank Brallier was one of the greatest athletes of all time.
