Growing popularity of mental health apps in developing countries
Increasing global population and rising rates of mental illnesses have made population health one of the most pressing global challenges. These challenges include increasing stress, aging populations, sedentary lifestyles, and substance abuse. World health organizations predict that over 60 percent of the world's population will be over the age of 65 by 2050, creating an enormous unmet need for better mental health services.

Traditional mental health care is difficult to access for many people, and most therapists have long waiting lists. Insurance can also be a barrier to getting help. Accessing resources has become more difficult with the COVID-19 pandemic, so mental health apps have become a viable alternative. However, such apps could compromise privacy.

As of October 2017, 44 mental health apps were available in China. These apps featured evidence-based elements and focused on education, counseling, and assessment. However, since then, the market for mental health apps has grown to over 100. Nevertheless, some important characteristics of these apps are still not clear, including their target population and evidence base for their content.

Mental health apps can be beneficial for preventing and treating mental health issues. Many apps are free and affordable and provide a user-friendly experience. The use of mental health apps can supplement traditional mental health services and reduce the need for expensive therapy. They can also help people learn self-management skills and promote health awareness.

One app that addresses these challenges is Wysa. This AI-powered digital platform for mental health supports individuals by providing them with access to licensed therapists. Wysa has successfully raised over $20 million from investors, including Google Assistant Investments and HealthQuad.
