To love and be loved......Torstai 04.12.2008 11:15

IÂ’m not a perfect person. I am a person with flaws and a person that has made quite a few mistakes along the way. I have been selfish. I still am. I am often rude and impatient. I want and expect things, just like every one of us. We all want things. We simply want things to be the way we want them to be. We keep wishing and hoping. But it takes faith, strong will power, and hard work to achieve what we want and to find a way to commit to a meaningful life.

I know I’m capable of loving and I love the people in my life so much that when I really think about it, I don’t see anything more important than just having them all here, alive and well, all the time. I guess that’s the only kind of love I truly know. The unconditional kind of love that we so often take for granted. We expect our family and friends to love us just the way we are all the time, no matter what we do. And we love them for the way they make us feel – comfortable, secure, loved and cared for. And that is such a selfish thing. It’s in our human nature that in order to love someone, first we have to feel loved and accepted by them. And we can think of so many things we dislike about the people we are close to, so many things that displease us and drive us crazy at times.

But there is a bigger kind of love. The love that goes beyond lack and boundary. The love that is no imitation. The love that is rarely valued in this world, where everything is geared toward the survival of the most competitive. Where compassion and honesty are considered silly and unnecessary weaknesses. And then when we are denied the comforts that we are so used to taking for granted, the frustration, the worry and the anger are so blinding and overpowering that we learn to simply fear love. For it is such a hard thing to do.

To love is to reach out and present a humble offering of understanding, patience, and compassion. To love is to sacrifice. To love is to see something bigger and so much more significant than what the people lost in lust and pointless erotic passion see in their blurred vision. To love is not to seek your own selfish satisfaction. To love is to give.
