ASD on lyhennys sanoista Atrial Septal Defect ja se tarkoittaa, että eteisten väliseinässä on aukko. Sikiöllä on ennen syntymäänsä luonnostaan aukko eteisten välillä (foramen ovale), sillä syntymättömällä lapsella veren kierrätys keuhkojen kautta on turhaa (kts. avoin valtimotiehyt). Useimmiten eteisväliseinän aukko sijaitsee lähellä tuota sikiöaikaista aukkoa, joka yleensä sulkeutuu itsestään lapsen kasvaessa. Eteisten väliseinän aukossa vasemmasta eteisestä runsashappinen veri pääsee kulkeutumaan takaisin oikeaan sydänpuoliskoon ja jatkamaan sieltä toistamiseen keuhkoihin puhdistumaan. Tästä seuraa, että oikea eteinen, oikea kammio ja keuhkovaltimo laajenevat.

Eteisväliseinän aukolle on tyypillistä, että se löytyy sattumalta lääkärintarkastuksen yhteydessä, koska tämä sydänvika aiheuttaa vain aniharvoin oireita leikki-ikäisillä lapsilla. Aivan pienille eteisväliseinän aukoille ei tarvitse tehdä mitään. Mutta jos kyseessä on suuri aukko, on uhkana myöhemmin keski-iässä oikean kammion voiman pettäminen. Oireet, hengenahdistus ja väsymys, ilmaantuvat yleensä vasta aikuisena. Sydämen voiman pettämisen estämiseksi aukko olisi suljettava jo 2-4 vuoden ikäisenä.

Suotuisissa olosuhteissa eteisten väliseinän aukko voidaan sulkea ilman leikkausta. Sydänkatetri viedään nivustaipeesta verisuonia pitkin sydämeen, ja katetrin kautta asennetaan aukkoon sulkulaite. Yli puolet eteisväliseinän aukoista voidaan nykyään sulkea ilman leikkausta. Jos aukko on hyvin kookas, tai jos eteisväliseinässä on monta aukkoa, eteisseptumdefekti voidaan sulkea vain leikkaamalla.
